Meet Your Tutor – Jay Treryth
Jay is a counsellor and Supervisor working in private practice in Cornwall, UK. A member of the counselling profession since 2016 and teaching CPCAB courses since 2018 , Jay is a safe pair of hands to hold a learning group, having been a student and a tutor at all levels.
His private practice leans towards supporting neurodiverse clients and people in the LGBT+ community. Jay believes in removing the medicalisation society imposes on people and brings this philosophy to his teaching, believing in an inclusive by design approach which includes group discussions, reflective exercises & real practice sessions alongside the teaching.
Jay hopes that by welcoming the truth and humanity of all their clients and students they will be empowered to do the same in their practice, creating positive energy, connection and relationships in the world.
Taking this approach fuels Jay's drive and love for this work, by living the values and principles of the course in how it is delivered. Jay is a member of NCPS and is familiar with the BACP's ethical framework too.
Outside of the professional world,
Jay enjoys the Cornish outdoors,
especially the beaches, spooky
podcasts, history books & virtual
city-builder games.

Regular tutorials and progress meetings

Case formulation and case review
-
Group supervision and peer learning
You'll build a clinical portfolio as you go, including:
-
a client log,
-
candidate self-review,
-
tutor-assessed observations — supported by a minimum of 60 hours of formally contracted one-to-one client work, including client assessment.
You'll also complete a mini research project, developing your ability to engage critically with counselling research and apply it to practice, and an externally assessed case review that draws together your theoretical understanding and client work.
Placement & Group Supervision
Placement
Arranging your own placement or practice setting is your responsibility as a student, as our cohorts are drawn from across the UK. Within this placement, you'll need to complete a minimum of 60 hours of formally contracted one-to-one counselling, exercising autonomy in your role as counsellor and carrying responsibility for client assessment.
To support you in securing a placement, The Wellbeing Academy provides an introductory letter outlining the course, its teaching, and what a placement would involve.
Group Supervision
Group supervision runs throughout the course.
Assessment & Coursework
Assessment is Pass/Fail (Proficient/Not Proficient) rather than graded. To achieve the qualification, you must be assessed as Proficient in both your internal and external assessment.
Internal assessment
Across the course, you'll build a portfolio evidencing 7 required learning outcomes, including working safely, legally and ethically as a psychotherapeutic counsellor; working at relational depth; exercising autonomy and taking responsibility for client assessment; and monitoring your own professional effectiveness. Coursework falls into three types — written/theory work, practical/skills work, and client-work-based evidence — submitted digitally as an e-portfolio incuding:

A client log
-
Tutor-assessed observations and peer/tutor feedback
-
Supervision log and supervisor report
-
A mini research project
-
External assessment — case review
You'll complete an externally assessed written case review of 3,000–3,500 words, marked outside The Wellbeing Academy.
